As we are completing our recovery from the fire that broke out in our Jewish community building last year, we are much stronger than we were just one year ago. We have seen dreams and visions realized, and we have overcome great obstacles. We feel blessed. We are blessed because we are set on a course to complete the integration of our Federation with our JCC building on the strengths of our past. We are blessed because today we have concluded a full academic year of JTE, Jewish Teen Education, a social/educational program for teens by teens in our community under the leadership of VP of Education Evan Wyner. We are blessed because this day also marks the graduation of the first cohort of our Yesod community leadership program under the leadership of VP of Leadership Development, Sharon Hasbani , which will benefit Jewish organizations across the community. And we are blessed because Women Philanthropy's success under the leadership of Dena Schulman-Green has re-invigorated our flagship divisions, Lion of Judah and Pomegranate and overseen the creation of a brand new division, Sabra Society which recently had its very successful launch event. We are blessed because our Partnership2gether relationship through the Southern New England Consortium, chaired by Barbara Green Orell with our sister community Afula-Gilboa, has brought us many opportunities to better connect with our brothers and sisters in Israel, including through our flagship young Israeli emissaries program.
As we look into the year to come, we look forward to continue serving our constituents at our Jewish community building and across the 30 towns that make up Greater New Haven with new features, offerings, and ways to engage in Jewish life. In addition, we are pleased to report that we have begun to transition to our new, modern and robust database which will help us better serve our donors. This change should be completed over the course of the next year.
There is no question that the challenges that lie ahead of us loom large; but our commitment to the Greater New Haven Jewish community from Milford to Chester, from New Haven to Wallingford and to all places in between has never been stronger. In the year ahead as we work to return home to our building on Amity Road and strengthen the programs and services offered within the building, we will also be spreading our wings to deliver quality programs and services throughout our community. We take seriously our responsibility to each and every member of our community and will move forward accordingly for as it is written—kol arevim zeh b’ zeh—all Jews are responsible for one another.

TIKKUN OLAM
We make the world a better place by caring for those in need and doing acts of tzedaka. Federation is the safety net.
Mrs. Gutman* is a 84 year-old widow living alone, a Holocaust survivor with two adult daughters, both of whom live out of state. She receives Social Security and Medicare, and she has severe dietary restrictions as a result of her diabetes, high blood pressure and her recently diagnosed celiac disease. A long-time client of JFS' Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program, Mrs. Gutman was recently referred internally by her social worker for several other agency services, including emergency food assistance as her physical conditions worsened notably and she experienced a precipitous decline in weight. In part through Federation allocation monies, JFS, in collaboration with her physician, has been able to put her on s gluten-free, low sodium, low sugar diet. Many of the food items she needs to maintain her health are beyond her financial means to purchase independently, but the Federation assistance has helped to ensure that she can acquire these specialty items on a regular basis.
*Original names have been changed to protect the privacy of the clients
283 children served through Food4Kids program
395 seniors enjoyed cultural programming
99,989 lb of food distributed through JFS food pantry
200 families and individuals received emergency assistance
By supporting the Annual Campaign, you can ensure that counseling, support groups, the food pantry, and senior services through JFS, The Towers, as well as through the JCC of Greater New Haven are available to all who need them, regardless of their ability to pay.
JEWISH EDUCATION
We ensure that the rich legacy of Jewish life, learning, values and traditions will be transmitted to a new generation.

JTE, Jewish Teen Education, is a year-old program in the Greater New Haven area created by teens for teens. JTE has completed two very successful semesters with great feedback from participating students. In the Fall of 2018, JTE will offer a range of classes, ranging from cooking and yoga to Israeli politics and comparative religions, for students entering grades 8 to 12.
In a recent interview with SNH editorial staff, JTE President Samantha Fleischman shares students’ impressions about the program’s first two semesters:
What did some of the teens have to say about the program, from your informal conversations throughout the past year? I talked to multiple students who were reluctant to join, but were pleasantly surprised by their experience. Everyone really loved their classes and teachers. We had some unique subjects like Comparative Religions, Controversy Debate and Understanding, Scandals of the Torah, JTE Yoga, The Big Questions, Jewish Images in Media, and Make a Difference. Gender Equality has definitely been my personal favorite. The teacher, Sharon Rosenblatt, has made the class really fun and interesting for all of the teens. I also really enjoyed the cooking class. We were able to make a mix of Jewish and Israeli foods and just typical American foods like cupcakes and muffins.
Why teens are coming back for a third semester? I think people are coming back for a third semester because they enjoyed the classes and saw the program as a great way to hang out with friends and meet new people.
What’s your favorite aspect of JTE? The fact that there is really something for everyone. It gave people from the entire community the opportunity to meet others and take classes that interested them. Unlike in school or Hebrew school, there are no obligations, you just take what you want to and think sounds interesting. I also love the sense of community that we are starting to build in the program.
299 Children in our community are enrolled in Jewish day schools.
Federation provided $39,600 in tuition offsets.

Yesod Lays the Foundation for Future Leaders
Published in Shalom New Haven, July 2017
What do an IT professional, a nurse, a lawyer, a robotics Ph.D., and a graphic designer all have in common? They are all local, rising Jewish community lay leaders who recently began the Yesod Leadership Program. On March 7, the men and women above and an additional 14 men and women joined together for their first Yesod class. The word yesod in Hebrew means foundation or basis, which is a fitting name for this new initiative for the Greater New Haven Jewish community. The Yesod program consists of a series of interactive classes that will take place at various Jewish community locations in the area. The curriculum was developed through the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning and was written by Jewish educator Dr. Erica Brown. Our own Sydney Perry, esteemed educator and former CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven is the facilitator for the course, and for all eight classes.
The goal of Yesod is to help our local lay leaders build and develop their personal and organizational leadership through a Jewish perspective. The 2017 Yesod cohort has enjoyed not only the curriculum in their classes thus far, but getting to know one another. They are learning from the texts, from Perry and from one another. Beyond just increasing their leadership skill set, this is an opportunity for them to forge connections with other Jewish lay leaders in our area that will serve our Jewish community for years to come. At a recent feedback session, the members of this cohort reported being pleased that they had a sense of being in a “safe room” in which they could learn not just from Jewish texts but also from one another. They reported feeling appreciative of being given this opportunity. As Perry states: “In this age of unprecedented change in the world and in our own community, we yearn for enduring wisdom to help us navigate and succeed in this topsy-turvey environment. At work, in leadership roles, at home with family and friends, we search for inspiring role models, a sense of purpose, reliable sources of guidance from the fields of business management and psychology and lessons from the richness of our Jewish tradition, history and text to help us make wise decisions. I feel so very fortunate to be guide, facilitator, educator and participant in Yesod. These are the leaders of tomorrow and their energy, engagement and experience, combined with the excellent curriculum from Melton, will allow them to meet the challenges that lie ahead. I expect great things!”
The members of this cohort come from nine area towns and represent a variety of levels of involvement in Jewish observance. Most importantly, each and every one of them is involved with and committed to his or her Jewish community, and is interested in growing that involvement. Thanks to the Jewish Foundations of North America, the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven, and our generous sponsor Andy Eder and the Eder Leader Institute, they will all have the opportunity to acquire new skills and grow in their commitment to their communities.
Sharon M. Hasbani is a board member of the JCC of Greater New Haven, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven and sits on the Executive Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. She is a graduate of the Wexner Heritage Program, which led to her position as Young Leadership Program Chair and her involvement in Yesod. She would like to thank Olga Markus for her invaluable work as Yesod Program Consultant.

Connecticut Increases Penalties for Hate Crimes
Published in Shalom New Haven, July 2017
In response to rising incidents of hate in our communities, the Jewish Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), in tandem with the AntiDefamation League (ADL), celebrated the recent passage of new, tougher hate crimes legislation in Connecticut.
This bill, slated to become the strongest legislation of its kind in the U.S., passed unanimously. Hate crimes previously considered Class D felonies, are now re-categorized as Class C felonies (making threats against a house of worship), punishable by 10 years in prison and $10,000 fines.
Community initiatives to prevent, educate and advocate against these threats have taken several forms. Under the banner of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven (JFGNH) State and local officials met at Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge with Jewish community leaders on February 23, to discuss the rise in anti-Semitism, targeted hate crimes and effective security tactics. After receiving security training on April 24, Judy Alperin, CEO of the JFGNH, spoke with community and faith leaders at Congregation Beth El-Keser Israel about increased incidents of violence.
Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven and its partner ADL actively promoted the bill through advocacy, culminating in the annual Legislative Breakfast organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council. Legislators Senator Len Fasano, Rep. Themis Klarides and Rep. Pat Dillon mutually shared their support for the new laws, encouraging the community and legislature to come together and set the tone by saying, “No more”.
In response, Michael Bloom, director of the Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut (JFACT) stated, “Nationwide, the rise in anti-Semitism and bomb threats against the Jewish community have caused stress, angst and fear in the Jewish community. These threats are real and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
Steve Ginsburg, director of the Connecticut office of ADL, reacted to the anti-Semitic incidents by calling for, “the community coming together to say this is not who we are.” He pointed to a 100 percent rise in reported incidents to the ADL since last summer.
“Hate crimes are distinct from other forms of criminal conduct,” said Ginsburg, “as they have a special emotional and psychological impact, expanding beyond the individual victim. Whenever a biasmotivated crime is committed, the victim’s entire community is left feeling victimized, vulnerable, fearful, isolated, and unprotected by the law. Connecticut has made clear today that by firming up our hate crimes law, all of our state’s residents and their respective communities are much closer to safety.

Recalling Fond Memories of Passover
Published in JDC Field Blog, April 2017
When Nadya B. was a young girl in Odessa, she celebrated Passover with her Yiddish-speaking grandparents whom she lived with at the time. She fondly remembers the traditions – the Seder, the stories, the time with family. But that was before the Communist regime in the Soviet Union cracked down on religion, before she got older and started to experience health challenges, and before the current crisis in Ukraine.
Nadya still lives in Odessa and suffers from severe heart disease, living on a pension of only $44 per month. Throughout the year, she receives critical assistance through the IFCJ Food and Medicine Lifeline, JDC’s operational partnership with the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ).
At a time of year that might otherwise be marred by the loneliness of aging and poverty, Nadya and thousands like her across the former Soviet Union are this year commemorating Passover with the delivery of boxes of matzah and traditional Passover fare, and festivities at JDC-supported Hesed social welfare centers. Elderly Jews across the former Soviet Union have the opportunity to gather with their communities and celebrate a holiday that allows us to unite around a shared table and tell the story of the Jewish people’s escape from slavery in Egypt.
This year in preparation for the holiday, JDC delivered more than 50,000 boxes of matzah through our partnership with the Claims Conference, and through the IFCJ Food and Medicine Lifeline.
Those who received the boxes of matzah are people who survived Communist oppression and in many cases the Holocaust, and are now living in abject poverty as they struggle to meet their most basic needs, including securing the food and medicine required simply to survive. While many of our families join fellow Jews around the world in clearing our kitchens of bread and filling them with kosher for Passover ingredients, those in the FSU will continue to struggle to put any kind of food on the table.
For more than 100 years, JDC has saved Jewish lives and built Jewish communities. Day by day, Jews in the former Soviet Union, with the help of JDC and our partners, are reinventing Jewish life that is grounded in both material security and a vibrant Jewish identity – in a part of the world where it was once nearly extinguished by the Holocaust and Communist-era religious repression.
Federation partners with global partners to deliver impact in Israel and in more than 70 countries around the globe.
