JEWISH  EDUCATION

We ensure that the rich legacy of Jewish life, learning, values and traditions will be transmitted to a new generation.
"Jewish education has been a central part of our family life since our eldest started at Ezra Academy in 2001. Over the years, each of our four children has grown to develop their own unique Jewish identity based on a solid foundation of education and experience. While we have given each of them a very similar foundation that includes formal education at Ezra, less formal education at Camp Yavneh, and regular synagogue participation, they have all come to their own conclusions on personal observance, Jewish community leadership and faith. We are proud that each of them has a strong Jewish identity, deep connection to and love of Israel, and the knowledge, values, and belief system needed to live their lives with Jewish values. Jewish education, through formal and informal, is critical to keeping Judaism relevant and alive in the next generation"  -Evan Wyner, father of four.
309 Children in our community are enrolled in Jewish day schools.
Federation provides $800 tuition offset for every child.
By supporting the Annual Campaign, you can help young people build strong Jewish identities and connections to Israel.

JEWISH  IDENTITY

We foster a Jewish identity by bringing the community together - whether virtually or physically -  in moments of joy, commemoration and revelation.
From the Summer 2016 Shalom New Haven:

IsraelFest New Haven was a collaboration of Greater New Haven synagogues and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, also known as Kesher. “The significance of IsraelFest is in bringing the community together from across the spectrum of Jewish life, generating a sense of peoplehood, and fostering the interrelationships within the Jewish community of Greater New Haven,” said Judy Alperin, CEO of Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. Participants echoed Ms. Alperin's remarks: “I can't imagine feeling 'community' even more than we did at IsraelFest. It is great being a part of such a beautiful family together!” said Sherri from Temple Beth Shalom of Hamden.
More than 1,000 people participated in Jewish programs and events supported by Federation

Shalom New Haven, The Voice of the Greater New Haven Jewish Community, is printed in 10,000 copies.
By supporting the Annual Campaign, you can help more people in our community experience the joy of Jewish life.

By supporting the Annual Campaign, you help bring a wide variety of Jewish experiences to children, teens and young adults in our community.

For Lauren Hass, the Wexner Heritage Program gave her the tools and confidence to be a Jewish leader, in a way she might not have been otherwise.

Lauren had a strong Jewish upbringing. Her family observed Shabbat and holidays, and she was instilled with the sense being Jewish is important, she said. She attended a Jewish day school, was active in BBYO growing up, and participated in Hillel during college. Her sense of Jewish identity was clear. “It was always who I was,” she said.

In the Wexner program’s New Member Institute, the program director talked about the imposter syndrome, or the belief that some people might not believe they deserve to be in the program. This resonated with Lauren, who, looking around the room, realized that we all feel doubtful of our ability to lead. Wexner helped her realize that yes, she could do this, and that you don’t need to be a superstar to be a successful leader.

When someone believes in you, it can be easier to start believing in your own abilities. Wexner has given Lauren the confidence to be a leader, and to do it well, she said.

Taking part in Wexner was like “winning the Jewish lottery,” Lauren said. She feels lucky and grateful to have been chosen to participate. Even though she initially didn’t intend to apply because she hadn’t heard of it and didn’t think she could handle the rigors of the program, Lauren quickly learned that the program was not something to say no to. “It changed the trajectory of my life,” she said.

Lauren is appreciative of Federation and the investment they made in the program and in her. Now, she feels, is her time to pay it forward by helping Ezra Academy continue to be a vital and vibrant part of our New Haven Jewish community.

The community needs people to say yes, Lauren said, and she might never have said yes to taking on the role of president at Ezra Academy without her Wexner experience.

We ensure a Jewish future by extending opportunities for children, teens and young adults to strengthen their ties to the community. We invest in leadership development.
We promote tikkun olam, the repair of the world, through advocacy and action. We represent the Jewish community's interests and concerns to public officials and agencies, the media and the community at large.

By supporting the Annual Campaign you are strengthening the voice of the Jewish community within the secular community

In April of 2016, the Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR) welcomed its first refugee family which consists of four young adults and a two-year-old boy all from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They came to the United States by way of Rwanda, where they had lived in a refugee camp with their extended family for more than a decade.

In just a few months, the family has made remarkable progress as they adjust to their new life in the U.S.  Their goal is to become independent as quickly as possible, and they take every opportunity to master the skills necessary to accomplish this goal. The young adults are working hard to improve their English, both through language classes and through interactions with JCARR volunteers and other community members.

They completed different levels of high school before leaving Rwanda, and each of them dreams of attending college in the United States. JCARR is collaborating with other local agencies to help each family member develop an educational plan and an employment search that fits with his/her needs, interests and goals.

In addition to helping the family navigate local educational resources, JCARR volunteers have organized an odd jobs network to help each family member learn skills that can improve his/her employment prospects. One family member has secured a steady part-time job in which he is thriving. Another attends a weekly class at IRIS where she is enjoying learning to sew.

JCARR includes volunteers from Temple Emanuel, Congregation Or Shalom, Congregation Beth El-Keser Israel, Congregation B’nai Jacob, and Congregation Mishkan Israel, with support from the Jewish Federation of New Haven.

Your Annual Campaign contribution affects more Jewish lives than any other organization in the world.

In a shared effort to promote regional development in Israel, unity, and Jewish identity, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, along with other Federations in our Southern Connecticut Region, partnered with the Jewish Agency for Israel to make an impact in the Afula-Gilboa region, which has experienced higher rates of unemployment, new immigrants and weaker educational infrastructures.

Federation helps at-risk youth in the Afula-Gioboa region through an After School Program for children from struggling and disadvantaged families and/or families in crisis—identified by professionals. Through this program, children stay in a protected educational environment for most of the day (until 4:30 p.m.). The program operates five days a week during the school year. Fifteen elementary school age children attend the program, receiving a hot meal, assistance with homework and enrichment activities.

Operated by Bayim Cham, which specializes in special needs populations, this holistic program integrates the home, parents, school and club's staff.

Internationally, Federation partners with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization. Together we work in more than 70 countries and in Israel to alleviate hunger and hardship and provide immediate relief and long-term development support for victims of natural and man-made disasters.

The Endeberrya family—mother, father and two children—fled with only the clothes on their backs after a bomb destroyed their home in the heart of conflict-ridden eastern Ukraine. With JDC, Federation is helping them, and thousands of other displaced Jews with uncertain futures find temporary homes, as well as supplying them with urgently-needed food, clothes, medical attention and financial support.

TIKKUN OLAM

We make the world a better place by caring for those in need and doing acts of tzedaka. Federation is the safety net.

132,000 lb of food distributed through JFS food pantry
758 families and individuals received emergency assistance
By supporting the Annual Campaign, you can ensure that counseling, support groups, the food pantry, and senior services through JFS, Tower One / Tower East, as well as through the JCC of Greater New Haven are available to all who need them, regardless of their ability to pay.
The Ellisons* are a young family of four who were in crisis when they went to the JFS Food Pantry in June of 2015, telling a JFS social worker that they were out of food and out of options.

Al* lost his plumbing job in October of 2014 and remained out of work for seven months.  Although he was now working 30 hours per week as a landscaper and Kathy* had received extra hours during the last few months in her part-time job as a CNA, they had not yet found an apartment that they felt they could afford. They had accumulated a great deal of debt over the preceding months and were unable to pay many of their bills. After providing them with a 30 lbs. package of emergency food, the JFS social worker met with Al and Kathy to map out a plan to prevent the family from becoming homeless. JFS Emergency funds were used to stabilize their short-term living arrangements until a longer-term housing solution could be implemented.  Simultaneously, an aggressive, proactive case management approach helped them to procure SNAP/Food Stamp benefits, financial assistance through Operation Fuel, and some moderate help with their car expenses, school expenses, and other basic needs.

The Ellisons recently moved into a new apartment, where they have been able to stay current with the $850/month rent payments every month to date. They continue to come to the JFS Food Pantry for supplemental food once per month, and the children have been receiving counseling at JFS on a weekly basis.

As we publish the Annual Report, we are struck by the knowledge that this retrospective speaks to the time when significant improvements were in process with regard to the structure of the Federation/JCC enterprise that was gaining significant momentum before the fire broke out in our Jewish community building on Amity Road in Woodbridge on December 5, 2016. Since that time, our professional and volunteer teams have been working in concert to address significant challenges while continuing the services our community has come to expect.

This report provides an overview to recount the 2015-16 program year, its milestones, challenges and successes.  2015-16 witnessed the completion of the tenure of our longtime leader, Sydney A. Perry’s tenure as CEO of the Jewish Federation. In concert with Sydney’s reputation as an educator extraordinaire, $600,000 was raised to endow the Wexner Fellowship program, for lay leader development, which will ensure that future leaders of our Jewish community benefit from the excellence that the Wexner program offers. The inaugural class of 5 Wexner Fellows from our community completed their course of study and all have grown to assume significant mantels of leadership in the community, serving organizations including: Ezra Academy, JCC of Greater New Haven & Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, as well as their synagogue communities.

As we said shalom to Sydney, we welcomed Judy Alperin as our new CEO. Judy hit the ground running on a quest to get to know our community and held many meetings from Milford to Chester, Cheshire to Woodbridge. At the same time she focused intently on understanding Federation/JCC operations, finances and staffing. This resulted in the delivery of an on-time, realistic budget in May, significant fiscal enhancements to strengthen our financial position and the restructuring and re-organization of internal operations to complete the integration of the Federation and JCC as well as create a new development department to streamline and increase fundraising activities across the enterprise.

We also bid JCC Director, Shelly Gans adieu as she departed for new adventures and welcomed Scott Cohen back as JCC Executive Director. Scott’s career in New Haven never led him far from the JCC and his resumption of the role was a natural transition.

Special programmatic highlights included IsraelFest, a large community-wide celebration whose success could be measured equally by the enthusiastic participation of each and every synagogue and agency as well as the 1,000 community members who proudly celebrated Israel’s birthday. This was also the inaugural year of the Beckerman Film Series, with quality films offered throughout the Greater New Haven area. The Jewish Foundation continues to make an impact with almost $2 million in investments to local Jewish organizations and synagogues and its stewardship of the Create a Jewish Legacy program which has built endowments to sustain several congregations and agencies.

This past year was a year of transitions with a new CEO and new presidents of the Federation, Foundation and JCC. We wish to thank Dr. Stephanie Wain, past president of the Jewish Federation, Bob Felice, past president of the JCC, Jeffrey Hoos, past chairman of the Jewish Foundation, Shelly Gans, former JCC Director and Sydney Perry, former CEO of the Jewish Federation for their guidance and support. We are standing on your shoulders and thank you for all you have invested toward strengthening our community and ensuring our collective future success.

With gratitude,

Dr. Norman Ravski                           Judy Alperin
